I don’t profess to be the most righteous Christian, but I do love Jesus Christ! Today I am looking at 5 lessons I learned from the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Face Life’s Tragedies Voluntarily
Even though Jesus died, he was resurrected. So what does that mean for me?
I know in the Christian understanding, Christ atoned for my sins. I accept that.
But I like to look at it metaphorically, the whole story is how to face the tragedies of life.
You notice that Jesus never fled? He always faced it, knowing he had to suffer. And in the end he was resurrected.
I believe that when I face my trials like Jesus, bad parts of me die. And then I become a new person and am better because of the suffering.
That does not mean I want to suffer. Jesus said, “If it is possible, let this cup pass from me.”
That is exactly how I feel when tough situations come. But by facing them and bearing them as nobly as I am able, I can discard those parts of me that are evil and become a new person.
What experiences have you had in life that deleted bad parts of you and made you a better person?
Forgiveness
Jesus was crucified in a brutal way. And he said, “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
In my personal life, when I feel I am being served an injustice, I have found anger sets me back. If I have the forgiveness that Jesus had, not only do I feel better, but often end up winning the situation.
When calm, I have options. Anger is sure to cause me more problems.
How has anger affected your life? Do you see the situation more clearly when you forgive?
Betrayal
“Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, ‘What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?’ So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.” Matthew 26:14-16 (NIV)
First I have to ask myself if I can be sure I am not betraying my friends and partners. And I need to remember the consequence is death, or no one can trust you, friends or enemies.
Second, I have to understand that people will betray me in life. How did Jesus face that?
When Judas came up to Jesus to betray him, he said “Do what you came for, friend.” I think the key here is to recognize that traitors will give themselves their own punishment. People that betray me, I can simply let it go and learn from it.
Have you betrayed someone, or been betrayed? How did you handle it?
No Friends
When Jesus was in his hardest moments, his friends forsook him.
“But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. Matthew 26:56 (NIV)
When I see friends struggling in their hardest moments, do I flee or help them out?
In my personal life, this is an example that often I will have to face the darkest moments alone. Sometimes friends don’t see what you are going through. Other times they will flee from you.
How often have you had to face your darkest moments alone? This seems to be a common theme in life, each person has to face the hardest time alone.
Resurrection
“The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.’” Matthew 28:5-6 (NIV)
This gives me encouragement in my darkest moments. I can remember that although I face death I can remain full of hope.
Jesus never doubted that He would be resurrected.
That is an example that I should never loose faith, even in the darkest moments.
Of all the lessons from this story, this is my favorite: never doubt that I will be resurrected. In other words, never loose hope and faith!
How did you feel in your darkest hour? Have you had dark times you fought through and never lost faith?
