Religious Debate: Is Religion Necessary?

Look at the past, the world history is one of religion vs religion. Most wars were started over religion. But it is so personal a feeling, something one turns to in the greatest distress, that we have clung to it for generation after generation. Ultimately the question comes down to: Does God live? Or is the question: Do we as humans operate more functionally if we believe God lives? Is religion necessary for you?

Religious Revolutions

Jesus Christ is possibly the biggest religious revolutionary leader in history. Since his short life, billions have turned to Christ for comfort in their perils, victory in wars, love in their anger, healing in sickness and every other situation imaginable.

So does that make Jesus right? Or is the reason Jesus is so popular because one may judge his teachings for themselves and see the results.

Mohammad lead one of the biggest revolutions in history. Today Muslims around the world turn to Allah for all their needs and wants.

There have been hundreds of religious revolutions, large ones that changed millions of minds, and small ones that change a few minds.

In contemplation of why people change their religious beliefs, a few things come to mind. The first is if someone experiences a more powerful spiritual experience, they are likely to be converted. The second is most people are looking for something to make their lives better.

Did you notice that for generations, people changed their religion but did not get rid of it? If their new religion was right, what about everyone that once converted to the old?

The World Without Religion

We have had a glimpse of a world without religion. It is such a new idea that we don’t really know what is going on. I have met many people that are without religion that seem very nice. But are they really without it? Or do they believe in something else religiously?

Is a world without religion a good place? Bad? It is true that science and modern technology has turned many into non religious truth seekers. They believe in nature and evolution. It seems to me nature, science, and new technology has become a sort of new religion.

I hardly know what to think of no religion. The world has seen so much change over the last century from technology and science, to religion and spirituality.

What do you think about the non religious? Are they happy and fulfilled in their lives? Do they have purpose?

Does Religion Constrict Our Abilities?

On the extreme side, the answer is very obvious. If we have views that the world should operate a certain way, we are unlikely to try new things.

Look at the strict Muslim countries. That is not where the computer or iphone was born. That is not where we have breakthrough medical discoveries. Why have we not seen more technology come from these places?

I am not knocking muslims. You could say the same of many more people or places. It seems to me the more our minds believe in the supernatural, the less likely we are to attempt to change the world with new discoveries.

Does religion constrict our minds from seeking new discoveries? Is that why science has become the modern excuse for no belief in God?

I read Steve Jobs biography. It would be difficult to say he was not religious. He traveled to India in his earlier life seeking enlightenment from Zen Buddhism. And that seemed to really stick with him throughout his life. He had a very interesting mind!

Conclusion

For myself, it is a matter of continuing to ask questions. “I don’t know” is the best answer I can give. What are your thoughts? Is religion necessary? If it is, it seems to me that would be for one of two reasons: God is real and we should believe in him and follow his instructions, or we as humans operate better if we have 100% belief in God. It certainly gives us great comfort in sickness, trials, and death.
