How to Recruit Cult Members

Are you needing cult members? Or just don’t want to get caught up being a cult member? You came to the right spot!

Check your deepest emotions. Isn’t there a part of you that craves being part of an elite group?
Why do kids form cliques? Why do adults create friendships that exclude some people while welcoming others?

Not everyone is in a cult, but everyone is intrigued by them. Why? Because cults contain elements that we either admire or despise. You might hate to admit it, but being part of a small, exclusive group seems appealing.

Of course, you wouldn’t join one. Or would you?

Cults aren’t just about strange beliefs or eccentric people. They meet psychological and emotional needs that many struggle to find elsewhere. Read that sentence again. It is the framework to recruit members for your cult.

Do you think people avoid emotional pain? Or do they secretly seek it? You might surprise yourself if you’re willing to admit the truth about those deeper feelings. And if you think you’re immune to societal influence, remember: we are all, in some way, brainwashed.

Purpose

Life is a search for purpose. Once we have our basic needs met, this question gnaws at us: Why are we here? What is our mission?

When recruiting cult members, you must know what your main purpose, and theirs, will be.

Purpose is more important to people than pleasure. Nothing feels better—nothing feels more spiritually or emotionally fulfilling—than having a purpose. When someone discovers their purpose, it’s like a switch is flipped, bringing higher energy and power into their life.

Purpose creates a sense of being found, of courage, and of deep friendship.

If I listed a thousand reasons why people join cults, purpose would top the list. It encompasses other motivations, like belonging, seeking adventure, feeling found, and searching for truth. These are core longings of the human soul, and people will go to great lengths to satisfy them.

Where Do You Belong?

I can speak to this one personally.

Without a home, friends, or direction, where do you belong?

For many, a cult feels more like home than the loneliness of being unwanted or isolated. A man who doesn’t need to belong can go far in life, but a man who belongs can go even farther.

You might think you don’t need to belong. I don’t believe that.

In our evolutionary past, survival depended on belonging to a group. Even today, those who don’t feel they belong often suffer worse health outcomes. The need to belong is universal, but when it drives people to compromise their values, it becomes dangerous.

Clarity in Chaos Brings Peace

When you’re caught in a dilemma—whether it’s about religion, politics, family, or business—you become vulnerable to the search for peace.

As humans, we crave clarity. Being stuck in the middle of a problem feels unsettling. The person who makes everything make sense becomes a source of peace and connection. You have to be that person.

If that person happens to be a cult leader, you might find yourself following them.

When chaos erupts, be cautious. Embrace the uncertainty and resist the pressure to make a quick decision. Cult leaders and politicians alike often create problems just to position themselves as the solution. Hero? That is what they pose as.

Novelty

If a stick snaps in the forest, you look.

And you must be the snapping stick for potential cult members.

Novelty captures our attention. When something fascinates us, we can’t let it go until we understand it. This is how cults begin: with novelty.

Novelty leads to a sense of purpose and mission. Members may not call the shots, but they fiercely defend the group’s ideas. Over time, everything in their world becomes proof that the group is right.

If you control the lens through which people see the world, you control them. Start with novelty; finish with mission and authority.

Authority

People love control. Real leaders understand the responsibilities of authority, but subordinates often don’t—and they revel in wielding power over others.

Think of Hitler and his men. Thousands of officers were as brutal, if not more so, than Hitler himself. Why? Because they had a mission, purpose, novelty, and authority.

Authority is intoxicating. It feeds desires that are natural to all humans. If you’re given authority over others, especially under the command of someone more powerful, you must watch yourself. That authority can lead you to justify almost anything.

Conclusion

If I were setting out to recruit people into a cult, here’s what I would do:

  1. Identify the Targets: Look for people searching for a mission or purpose, feeling lonely, or facing a life crisis.
  2. Offer Solutions: Give them purpose, community, and a way to resolve their crisis.
  3. Start with Novelty: Draw them in with something new and fascinating.
  4. Provide Peace: Help them make sense of their internal or external chaos.
  5. Bring Them Closer to God: Or at least closer to something they perceive as divine.
  6. Grant Authority: Give the most devoted members minor authority over others, starting with simple, reasonable restrictions.
  7. Build Commitment: Gradually increase emotional and spiritual investment through love, determination, and shared mission.
