What Is Our Life Mission?

One of the most consequential questions we could ask: what is our life mission? Why are we here? What is our purpose? This changes what we do in religion, work, family, and how we go about our day to day lives. I am writing this article to ask questions of myself as well as the reader. I do not have the answer for you, nor you for me. It is very difficult to go through life without meaning. And life is short, we have to make it count.

Family

One could argue that our family is the most important thing we each one have. But how many people actually act that out?

It seems to me that taking care of our family is a good reason to get up in the morning and do our work. It has to be one of the biggest motivators in the world today. This is especially true for people who have kids.

But the question, Is family my life mission? Is family your life mission? Is that enough for me on my death bed? Would I be perfectly satisfied if I had raised a good family, treated my brothers, sisters, and parents well, and had good children who would do the same?

My answer to that question is: I would be dissatisfied if I had not raised a family and treated my acquaintances well. So that gives me at least part of my life mission. Is that enough for me? Will I be satisfied if I don’t make a greater impact on the world?

Religion

100 years ago religion was many peoples purpose. While that has decreased, it is not uncommon today.

In my young days, dad would often say, “The purpose of this life is to become like God.”

The older I got, the more seriously I took this. It really gave me a reason to do everything I did. The importance of family was encompassed by that.

And then dad is a pedophile and not the average one. He was also a very spiritual person.(more on that later) Should that change my life mission? Well in my situation in upended it very nicely. Many say to me, “brother, that religion was so wrong. Join us! We don’t do that crazy shit.”

Look, I understand that you don’t. However there are a thousand options, and they are all very muddled up with history and other things that seem very vain in my estimation.

Is my life mission to become like God? Is yours? Could there be a more noble aim?

“God is not real!” would be the atheist argument.

I read the book Mans Search For Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl. Extremely good book on the subject of meaning in our lives. Perhaps it is the most accurate book I have read, because it does not make the point that a certain path is right, and he looks at his own life through the struggle of the concentration camps in Germany, and he strives to find meaning.

I can’t answer this question for myself right now. I have to keep asking the question. Can you answer this question in your life?

Work

Some people make work their mission in life and they may say family is important, and perhaps so. But they give their all to work. Is it because of money, or because of how they feel at work? Is it because they have done it so long that they would rather not change?

But to some it is not just work, it is a mission. Take Elon Musk. His mission is going multi planetary. And you could not change that. Sure he takes care of his family. If family was Elon Musks only mission he would have quit a long time ago. He has all the money he needs.

When I was growing up we worked all day, but it was encompassed by religion. It was for the purpose of becoming like God. I suppose many people have a belief that God is their life mission and they do their work to stay busy and make money.

Conclusion

What is your LIFE MISSION? Family? Work? To Become like God? Why do you get up in the morning? Will you be satisfied on your death bed? If you are not satisfied with your answers, what sacrifice are you willing to make to improve your life mission?

These are the questions I am asking myself.
